I cannot imagine a more stunning view than the one from the caldera on Santorini, Greece. On my recent trip I enjoyed this view each day. Greek yogurt and honey with fresh bread from the corner market and a good cup of coffee made for fabulous mornings. My favorite day was the one that we hiked to the town of Oia from Fira. We ate a well deserved dinner of calamari and greens with lemon & olive oil. The next day I spent two hours in the small archeological museum in Fira enjoying the tiny playful figurines, ancient pottery from 2700 B.C., and the joyful wall paintings from the archeological site on the far side of the island.
Inspiration for colors that I use in Kirke clothing come from many places. These succulants have an appealing burnt red color that fades into green. I think this combination will find its way into the seams of a new top. For that matter the sea is such a jewel-like color with many stunning shades of blue and green that I'm sure those colors will be incorporated into a Kirke top too.
I'm off to Greece, my favorite country, where I've lived twice for short periods of time. Greece is also the inspiration for my company's name. Some of you have asked me where the name, Kirke comes from, it is Greek for Circe, the Greek goddess whose beauty turned Odyssey's men into pigs in Homer's epic, The Odyssey. While I will not be visiting Kirke's island during my visit, I look forward to visiting Athens, Delphi, and the island of Santorini, reputed to have been the site of the lost city of Atlantis. Now, if I'm not inspired by those beautiful sites in creating my clothes, then.......... Well, I know I will be!
The Greeks love conversation and fashion, and my eyes will be wide open to see what has changed in style since I was last in the country, some 12 years ago. Greeks have a flai
r for elegant but humble smplicity, not only with with color and shape but also with a warm and inviting atmosphere. They let the beauty of the country's natural landscape speak for itself, and and even if my clothing doesn't completely capture this elegant simplicity..... I certainly strive to let the natural beauty of the wearer shine through in the simple shapes and textures of the tops I design.
Hear more on my return, a couple of weeks from now.
